Message from our President
We are NOW in the month of May which is “Youth Service” month. How time flies!
The Youth and Vocational Team have the following activities occurring this month: -
Bayspeak is a public speaking competition between local secondary schools. There are two levels, Year 7 to Year 9 and Years 10 to 12. Each participant can select the subject of their speech.
This is a wonderful opportunity to hear from our young students on a variety of topics. Come along and be prepared to be amazed.
Julie Reid will update us about the time and place for all the heats at this Wednesday’s meeting.
RYLA will be held this year from 26th June to 1st July in Flinders on the Peninsula. RYLA is a Youth Leadership training programme for 18- to 30-year-olds.
STEM is an approach to learning and development that integrates the areas of science, technology, and mathematics. Through STEM students develop key skills including, problem solving, creativity, critical analysis, teamwork and independent thinking.
We are currently seeking applications for both the RYLA and STEM programmes.
If you think you know a young person who shows leadership potential and who would benefit from this weeklong training programme, please call one of the Youth and Vocational committee members.
We anticipate that May will be a very busy and exciting month for the following reasons: - Bayspeak dates:-

23rd May Heat 3 Mentone Girls Grammar
7th June Final Firbank Girls Grammar (Centenary Students Centre)

May 25th Marriott Services Ball, 50th anniversary celebration and fundraising event.
May 29th International dinner. Our club is hosting 50 guests who are attending the International Convention in Melbourne. Not only will this be a great night at the Royal Brighton Yacht Club for our members, partners, and friends, you will hear from two interesting guest speakers while enjoying a delicious dinner and the company of new Rotarian friends.
We certainly do have a lot on in May!

May 4: Mahjong is happening again on Thursday, May 4th, 7pm at the Healey. Please respond if they wish to come so that we can set up the required number of tables, Mahjong sets and books.A sheet will also be placed on the registration desk on Wednesday, which Sam will look after.
June 10 - All members and their partners are invited to a night of fellowship at the home of Ken and Faye’s . More details to follow but pop it in the diary now!
Club member awards: Each year, a committee meets to consider the awards to members. As part of this process, members are invited to submit nominations for awards (and their reasons) for the committee to consider. These should be forwarded to the Club secreatary, Karin Soster

The last time PDG Daryl visited our club was in the capacity as DG of D9810, however, today he came to talk about his book Empire’s Noble Son which was published in 2019 and tells of the little known story of a very brave Australian soldier during WW1, 2nd Lt Lyle Buntine MC, who was a member of the British Royal Flying Corp. David’s talk portrayed the life and times, and the essence of what was considered important in Australia during the early 20th Century where reverence was held for “God, King and Country”. Lyle Buntine was born Walter Horace ‘Lyle’ Buntine and attended Caulfield grammar 1903 – 1913 when it was a private school owned by his father.

Tables, Chairs and Music A winning community combination from Members of the Rotary Club of Bentleigh Moorabbin Central to support Calvary Bethlehem patients
This week’s club meeting took place at Calvary Bethlehem Hospital in South Caulfield, with a continental breakfast served in the St Luke’s Education Centre in their wonderful new premises. Club members were welcomed by David Zerman and Karyn Conway.
Our club was represented by members Peter O’Brien, Samantha Langridge and Helen Nodrum.
Congratulations to the members of Glen Eira’s sustainability, parks and gardens teams on what was a very successful morning during which 2,000 shrubs, groundcovers and grasses were planted by 150 community volunteers at Wattle Grove Reserve in McKinnon.
