Message from our President
“Serve to Change Lives”
Looking forward to going back home to Cilantro for this week and next week’s breakfast meeting, 7am for prompt 7.10am start.
At the start of this Rotary year, we set a four-point action plan, as follows:
• Increase our impact
• Expand our Reach
• Enhance Participant Engagement
• Increase our Ability to Adapt
As we draw near to the halfway mark of this Rotary year, I would like to offer some expansion on the last of our action plan points. I have referred in a previous report a couple of weeks ago to the first point “ Increase our Impact”, and I am hopeful, moving forward that this becomes the core function of how we report our club activities – not in monetary terms but in impact terms, the social outcome of our work.
Increase our Ability to Adapt.
Paul Harris noted way back in our 100-year history that “The only constant in life is CHANGE”. It has been noted that the electric light bulb did not come about by the constant improvement in Candles.
So too for us, in order to increase our ability to adapt, we need to build a culture that is willing to take risks. Not all risks will pay off but lessons are then learned and we move forward that way.
We do need to preserve the Core – it has stood Rotary in good stead for the last 100 years, however, progress can be stimulated around these core values.
One way we can increase our ability to adapt is by streamlining governance, structure, and processes. On reflection within our RCBMC service structure, we have too many functions for too few members. We should be setting our priorities at the beginning of the year and concentrating our manpower at that level, not covering a multitude of roles which makes us ineffective and cumbersome.
Another solid way of increasing our ability to adapt is to have streamlined governance within our club, achieved by always having a President-Elect in the wings working in tandem with the President and a President-Elect Nominee. All board members should be fully conversant with all club activities and transparency and communication to the membership are the priority. Lastly, we need all club members to be interested in what the club is doing and when and where possible to participate.
Our last meeting for this year will be on 15th December.
With every best wish
Helen Nodrum
Special event Sunday December 5 RI President Nominee Gordon McInally will be speaking on-line

I had the pleasure of attending the College of Governors luncheon on Sunday. The event was hosted by Governor Daryl and organised by his partner and fellow Rotarian, Jenny. It was held at the Churchill Waverly Golf and Bowls Club.
The meeting was held at the Royal Brighton Yacht Club and on Zoom. The Chair was Margaret Lucas. There were 2 guests, Samantha Langridge (Jo Impey) and Chad (Geoff Gartley). The guest speaker was Gerald Quigley who was introduced by Margaret Lucas.
Rotary International President Shekhar Mehta joined the Rotary delegation to the 26th United Nations climate conference in Glasgow, Scotland, on 10 November to explore ways Rotary can work on environmental challenges, including by restoring mangroves, a crucial ecosystem that can mitigate the effects of climate change in coastal areas.
The meeting was held at the Royal Brighton Yacht Club and on Zoom. There were two visitors, Samantha Langridge (Introduced by Jo Impey) and Gaurar Gaur ( introduced by Ron Brownlees).
Our club was happy to accept an invitation from Glen Eira Police to assist in their “Safe Plate Day” held on Saturday last 20th November at the Glen Eira Town Hall carpark area.
We partnered with other community groups, State Emergency Service (SES), fire brigade, and neighborhood watch, not to mention our local law officers. The SES truck, a fire brigade truck, and the very impressive police pursuit vehicles were there on the day – a definite drawcard for the families and children to see over these impressive vehicles. Last but not least thankfully “the coffee cart”.
Bringing Joy in a time of Depression. For more than a decade, RCBMC has teamed with Community organisations in Glen Eira and Kingston to provide Christmas Cakes, Puddings and Mince pies to bring some Christmas Cheer to those who are doing it tough. The goodies are packed and delivered to the Salvation Army, Family Life, The Holland Foundation, and Glen Eira Community Information and Support Services.
