Message from our President
I was pleased to induct and welcome Dr Helen Parker to our club last Wednesday.
Helen is no stranger to us, having attended many club functions with partner DGE Ian. Helen will be a wonderful support to Ian as he takes up his role of DG 9810 on July 1st.
Not long now Ian!
Our Youth and Vocational Committee are starring this week.
As mentioned at last weeks meeting Margaret, Helen and I had the pleasure of attending Bayspeak, the first heat of a speech competition held at Firbank Girls Grammar in Brighton.
This is one of the Youth and Vocational Programmes our club supports each year.
Our club hosted the evening with Julie Reid as the MC. Julie did a fantastic job, introducing three students from the Junior School competing from Year levels 7 to 9 and 5 Senior students from Years 10 to 12 representing either Kilvington Grammar or Firbank Girls Grammar.
Sadly, there were no boys represented on this occasion although Kilvington is a Co-Educational school.
There are five Rotary Clubs involved across two Districts who together organise and sponsor the event plus they are joined by Toastmasters who provide the adjudicators and the timekeeper. This project is a wonderful example of an interclub, inter District, a community group (Toastmasters) and Schools working together on a very worthwhile youth project.
The students choose their own topic, many addressing social and global issues.
Two juniors and two seniors from each heat will go into the finals. There will be 12 participants in the finals.
The dates for the next Heats and final are: -
Heat 2 16th May Brighton Grammar
Heat 3 23rd May Mentone Girls Grammar
Final 7th June Firbank Girls Grammar (Centenary Students Centre)
I encourage you to go along to the next Heat(s) and or the Final as the students are entertaining, informative and showcase the potential of our young people.

DGE Ian was our chairperson for today’s club meeting at Cilantro. Ron conducted Invocation, and Tony conducted the Loyal Toast to King and Country. Tim introduced his two guests – Michelle and Aimee. Charles joined the meeting via Zoom.
Sam chaired today’s meeting at Cilantro, with Helen conducting Invocation, and Peter O – the Loyal Toast. Neville joined via Zoom, and a surprise visit from former member Max Trist.
Helen chaired today’s meeting at Cilantro, with Paul conducting Invocation, and Anna the Loyal Toast. And we were joined by Irina – Anna’s guest for the meeting. Charles and Peter joined the meeting via Zoom.
ANZAC Services
Many of our club members joined one of the many ANZAC services held yesterday to commemorate ANZAC Day - at Cheltenham, Bentleigh, Caulfield, Oakleigh, Highett and Dingley.
It was suggested our club should place a wreath at next years’ service at Bentleigh RSL.
The last time PDG Daryl visited our club was in the capacity as DG of D9810, however, today he came to talk about his book Empire’s Noble Son which was published in 2019 and tells of the little known story of a very brave Australian soldier during WW1, 2nd Lt Lyle Buntine MC, who was a member of the British Royal Flying Corp. David’s talk portrayed the life and times, and the essence of what was considered important in Australia during the early 20th Century where reverence was held for “God, King and Country”. Lyle Buntine was born Walter Horace ‘Lyle’ Buntine and attended Caulfield grammar 1903 – 1913 when it was a private school owned by his father.

This week’s club meeting took place at Calvary Bethlehem Hospital in South Caulfield, with a continental breakfast served in the St Luke’s Education Centre in their wonderful new premises. Club members were welcomed by David Zerman and Karyn Conway.
