Message from our President
We all enjoyed hearing PDG Dr. Daryl Moran tell the story of Lyle Buntine, a young Australian who served with the British Army’s Royal Flying Corps during the Great War, tragically, losing his life. It was evident that everyone was impressed as Daryl sold all the books “Empire’s Noble Son” he had brought. I was delighted when one of our visitors said how fantastic our speakers have been. Thank you to all the members who have supplied Paul with the information to make this happen.
On Thursday, we started a Mahjong Club, hosted by Sue at the Healey Retirement Centre. Twelve people came along to learn how to play from two Healey residents, Alan and Anne, who gave up their time to teach beginners. It was a very successful evening with supper supplied by Faye and me with Sue on the coffee machine, taking up the challenge of the varied requests. A lot of fun.
On Thursday May 25th Marriott Support Services will be having their 50th Anniversary Ball. Let’s show our support to Marriott Services, one of our Community Partners by attending the 50th Anniversary Ball, by organising a table of friends, family, or work colleagues. It is also a celebration of the Club’s 50-year association with Marriott through past Club member, Alan Marriott, current members Ron Brownlees, and me plus Faye’s husband, Ken’s family.
I mentioned at last week’s meeting about the Free 3-day House of Friendship pass at the Rotary Convention.
This is an opportunity to connect with thousands (12’600 registered attendees) of fellow Rotary members from around the world and have access to hundreds of Rotary project booths, vendors, food, and entertainment. A complimentary pass valid Monday-Wednesday, 29-31 May, for the House of Friendship. No additional purchase is required.
We received notification from Interplast that they will have a stand in the House of Friendship. They would love to see you there if you are coming in. Their stand number is 669
Friends and family are also eligible to enjoy this special access to the House of Friendship, so bring them along to learn what’s special about Rotary!
Also, there will be a Food festival “Streets of Melbourne” on the Monday and Tuesday.
Why not make a day and night of it on the Tuesday, go into the House of Friendship followed by wandering the streets of Melbourne to enjoy the amazing variety of food.
However, don’t forget Monday May 29th is our Club International Dinner at Brighton Yacht Club when we will be welcoming 50 guests. More on this occasion next week.
Tomorrow is ANZAC Day, our National Day of Remembrance that commemorates all Australians and New Zealanders "who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations".
Whether you are going to a Dawn Service, Marching or a Service later in the day or taking the opportunity to meet family and friends do take the time to remember “Lest We Forget”.

The last time PDG Daryl visited our club was in the capacity as DG of D9810, however, today he came to talk about his book Empire’s Noble Son which was published in 2019 and tells of the little known story of a very brave Australian soldier during WW1, 2nd Lt Lyle Buntine MC, who was a member of the British Royal Flying Corp. David’s talk portrayed the life and times, and the essence of what was considered important in Australia during the early 20th Century where reverence was held for “God, King and Country”. Lyle Buntine was born Walter Horace ‘Lyle’ Buntine and attended Caulfield grammar 1903 – 1913 when it was a private school owned by his father.

Tables, Chairs and Music A winning community combination from Members of the Rotary Club of Bentleigh Moorabbin Central to support Calvary Bethlehem patients
This week’s club meeting took place at Calvary Bethlehem Hospital in South Caulfield, with a continental breakfast served in the St Luke’s Education Centre in their wonderful new premises. Club members were welcomed by David Zerman and Karyn Conway.
Our club was represented by members Peter O’Brien, Samantha Langridge and Helen Nodrum.
Congratulations to the members of Glen Eira’s sustainability, parks and gardens teams on what was a very successful morning during which 2,000 shrubs, groundcovers and grasses were planted by 150 community volunteers at Wattle Grove Reserve in McKinnon.
