Message from our President
From the Desk of President Margaret
Daylight saving has arrived and with it promises of warmer and finer weather. This should bode well for our Bentleigh Market as the Market committee attributes the low turnout of pedestrian traffic and stall holders was in part due to the inclement weather over the winter months. Let us hope that this is the case as we rely heavily on the income from the market for what we do.
The Board, at its September meeting, approved the sum of $3,500 (as requested by the Market Committee) for digital advertising. Let us hope that it will bring some positive results although evaluation of this could be problematic. This could also be a “catch 22” situation where lack of stallholders would discourage pedestrians to visit the market. It may also be a “chicken and egg” case where lack of pedestrians may mean that stallholders are not prepared to set up at the market.
I will therefore reiterate that this brings us to the importance of not “putting all our eggs in one basket.” We have relied for more than forty years on the income from the market for our work in the community, locally and wider afield. We should be exploring other options for fundraising. Please forward your suggestions, on other means of raising funds, to the Fundraising Options Group. The convenor of this group is Greg O’Shea and the other two members are Linda O’Brien and Tim Lynch.

Jo was our chairperson at this morning club meeting at The Healey in South Road Moorabbin. A lovely breakfast was prepared by Sue and her team at The Healey, with breakfast served in the community room, and our guest speaker presentation held in the lounge. Tony performed the loyal toast, and Karin performed the invocation. GUEST SPEAKER – Vicky McKay, president of Sandringham Life Saving Club – Silver Salties program
Ron chaired today's club meeting at Cilantro. Larry conducted Invocation and Geoff conducted the Loyal toast after the club observed a minutes silence in recognition of the Queens passing. Tony, Charles, Glenda, Peter N, Terry and Karin joined the meeting via Zoom.
Rotary International President Jennifer Jones appeared on the main stage at the star-studded Global Citizen Festival on 24 September to highlight Rotary’s commitment to eradicating polio and announce an additional US$150 million pledge toward that end.
After discovering new perspectives and being inspired by new ideas at the 2022 Rotary International Convention, attendees and virtual participants are looking ahead to next year's gathering in Melbourne, the sparkling second city of Australia.

Pedestrian count 1201
Market report: lots of smiling early risers happy that daylight savings has arrived. A Little chilly but with every second patron in a black puffer jacket most were warm enough. All but 20 stalls let - so plenty of activity an people around. We had a roasted pistachio nut vendor - Ron thought the nuts were tough to bite through and very very crunchy. A second busker fronted up and wanted t0o start playing (nice for the market to be popular again).
