Message from our President
From the Desk of President Margaret
This week’s report will focus on the discussions and outcomes of the Board meeting held on 10 August 2022.
It is only the second month of the Rotary year but the committees have been busy and active. The Youth and Vocational committee has many activities in the pipeline including reconnection with McKinnon Interact club, which was dormant during the covid lockdown period. The committee is also getting involved in the secondary schools Rotary public speaking competition, which has the “four way test” as the theme. The committee has also agreed to continue our support for the positive achievement award for Bentleigh Secondary College and it is also exploring candidates, through schools, for the National Youth Science Forum.
The Community committee has approved 2 donations.
One is to the Glen Eira Community and Information Support Services and the other to Riding for the Disabled. The club has an ongoing relationship with these organisations for a number of years and it is in keeping with our objective of fostering ongoing support rather than making small donations to organisations which the club has little or no knowledge of the impact of that support.
Linda O’Brien also reported that the “paperwork” for reimbursement from Rotary Foundation for supporting the grants the club made to Calvary Care and Marriott Services have been submitted and money is expected very soon.
The Board also reviewed the Standing Orders for the Market Trustees and voted on the change of membership for the Trustees from Previous Past President to that of the Market Manager. This change will hopefully eliminate confusion in future years.
The final and important decision the Board made was to approve the President’s proposal of establishing a “Fundraising Options Group”. This is important because all members will be aware that the club has enjoyed its income from the Bentleigh Sunday Market for over forty years. It would appear that the new norm, post covid lockdown, has seen the decline in the popularity of Sunday Markets throughout Melbourne. It is therefore a proactive move for the club to explore other forms of fundraising rather than continue “to put all our eggs in one basket.” Greg O’Shea has agreed to chair the group and Linda O’Brien and Tim Lynch have volunteered to be part of the group. The group will have till early next year to report back to the Board. I encourage any member who has ideas and/or are prepared to be involved contact either Greg, Linda or Tim Lynch.
Please remember that this is our club and it is up to all of us to keep it vibrant in every way in order to “Make a Difference” to the world we live in.

David, who is District 9810's Zone representative, will be attending our meeting this week to explain in more detail about regionalisation. All members are encouraged to attend so that we will have a better understanding of this important issue prior to casting our vote. Chairperson this week was Ron Browless and the guest speaker was Peter Hendrix from Swimwell.
International toast was provided by Grant Perry. Peter runs an open water swim school in Melbourne's Bayside and explained to members the importance of exercise and the benefits of swimming.
In the festive atmosphere of a gala dinner, Rotary members raised glasses in toasts and kindled friendships in Lviv as they welcomed a group of Ukrainians to the International Fellowship of Flying Rotarians. The next day, the Ukrainian members showed visitors former Eastern Bloc aircraft at a military base that had become a general aviation field.
Grant was our chairperson for today’s club meeting at Cilantro. Geoff conducted invocation and Jo conducted the loyal toast. Julie, Glenda, Charles and Karin joined the meeting via Zoom.
Roy Kaplan, our own club member, was our guest speaker for today’s meeting, and was joined by his wife, Hilary, and Michelle.
After discovering new perspectives and being inspired by new ideas at the 2022 Rotary International Convention, attendees and virtual participants are looking ahead to next year's gathering in Melbourne, the sparkling second city of Australia.

Market report: mild conditions - some thought it brisk. 4 causal stalls sold. Stall holders Increasing number of stall holders asking to leave cars in market where space permits. A few stall holders spreading into adjacent space - less of issue when we only have 40% occupancy.
Marg and bill attended to a messy situation deposited by a large dog - owners of said animal were irresponsible 😳 . Next time we have an electrician on site would be good for the extension cord/ multi power points to be hardwired.
