Message from our President - Ron's Ramblings

Well, 2024 is now under way and here is my first ‘ramblings’ for the year. I hope you have all has a good break and an enjoyable Christmas and New Yer.
Our first meeting will be on 17th at The Deck in Bay street Brighton at 7.15.am, and we  will be voting on a couple of major donations to Rotary Foundation and Polio Plus as well as on for the Australian Rotary Health Foundation. We do not have a speaker this week but it will be a good chance for some fellowship and chat about our activities during the break.
January 24th will be our first meeting for the year so let’s try and make it a good one for the Cilantro team.
Linda and peter have visited Warrnambool with some of the conference committee to check out some of the venues and arrangements and will report back at the next meeting. If you have not registered now is the time to do so.
You may not be aware, but Glenda and Warren contracted Influenza A whilst on their trip to The Philippines and Glenda got pneumonia on return so we hope they are now well  recovered.
Roy has recovered well from his recent surgery and we wish him well on his first session of Chemotherapy this week.
Charles Rener had his 90th birthday 0n December 28th and I delivered a card and congratulatory letter to him under club seal on behalf of the club. The Rotary Club of Bentleigh was Chartered on 17th January 1974 and as its longest serving member by way of continuing membership of our current club, Charles has also achieved 50 years  membership of Rotary. What a great achievement. This will be formally recognised at this weeks meeting.

Remember, our first meeting for 2024 is planned for January 17th at The Deck in Bay Street Brighton. Details here.

Yours in Rotary  ‘Create Hope in The World.’

Club Meeting December 13 2023

Today’s meeting at Cilantro was our last for 2023 and what a fun meeting it was and enjoyed by all who attended.  Alan chaired the meeting, and Glenda, Faye and Roy were apologies.  Grant performed his International Club toast which, very fittingly, was toasted to President Svein Magne Sirnes of the Rotary Club of Drobak in Norway – Drobak officially being recognised worldwide as the ‘home of Santa Claus’.

Special Evening Meeting November 29 2023
This week we enjoyed a very special evening with guest speaker, author Laraine Stephens.
We had a number of guests attend on the evening and all appeared to have enjoyed the night.
Laraine had worked as a teacher-librarian and Head of Library before she became a writer of historical crime fiction. Her first novel in the Reggie da Costa Mysteries, was The Death Mask Murders (2021) followed by Deadly Intent (2022) and then A Deadly Game in 2023. Laraine sets her Reggie da Costa Mysteries in Melbourne, early 20th century, in the aftermath of the Great war and during the heady days of 1920's, when gangs, sly grog and gambling dens inhabited the back streets of Melbourne.
Laraine happily signed copies of her books at the end of the evening.
Our thanks to Tony and the staff at Holmsglen for making our evening so special.
Take read more link to see some pics of the evening.

Note from the Editor re Images and Events
A point regarding the submission of images for the Bulletin and Website: Members are reminded that images have to meet a minimum size requirement, as has been specified for some time in the section at the bottom of this Bulletin. 820 pixels is the minimum size required with larger being better as this allows for cropping. The submission of images via MMS is NOT preferred as they are too small and of inferior quality. Email or Whatsapp is preferred.
Would any member like to take responsibility for the updating of the Club's Event Calendar? I have created a page of instructions here so it is very easy to take over.
Thank you, Ian Ballantine
