Last Thursday our meeting was a social dinner at Jo’s Restaurant in Mentone. This was well attended by members and partners, we even had a guest in the form of PDG Bob Richards. The food was good, as was the company and the décor can be described as interesting. If the décor represents aspects of the restaurant’s owner’s life then he has had a very interesting life.
Last Saturday afternoon, Jo, Tim and Angela Lynch and myself attended the musical show The Book of Musicals. This was a collection of musical numbers by the International Dance Syllabus, a local song and dance studio. It was an enjoyable afternoon listening to and watching familiar musical numbers, mostly modern ballet. It also reminded me of watching my sister, Claire, dancing on the Alexander Theatre stage for many years – though mostly classical ballet and tap.
And while we are talking about music, Kingston Council have two musical events. Free singing sessions, called Finding Your Voice, from 29th April to the 24th June, at 1100hrs. The other has less participation and is called Melodies of Beginning, on the 2nd May at 1930hrs. Further information will be emailed to members.
In the last bulletin I mentioned that World Immunization Week is the 24th - 30th of April and the contribution of Rotary to Polio eradication, this week I thought that I would touch on Malaria. Malaria, of all the infectious diseases, is one of the major causes of morbidity and mortality across the world. While Rotary’s involvement, through Rotarians Against Malaria, is mostly to do with prevention and diagnosis by supplying equipment and materials to communities in malarious areas some funds are channelled into vaccination research. If you wish to know more look at last weeks bulletin as there is link to an article on the Club’s website that Ian has supplied.
This Saturday, the 25th of April is ANZAC day, this commemorates the landing of ANZAC (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) forces on the Turkish peninsula of Gallipoli, during the First World War. More broadly it is used to remember all those that served in wars since then. Personally, I have discovered that I had three granduncles who volunteered in 1915 and spent the rest of the war in France on the Western Front, sadly, only two came home, the eldest is buried in England.
