Message from our President
From the Desk of President Margaret
I am writing this on a beautiful Sunday morning. The sun is out and the weather perfect. I hope that our Bentleigh Sunday market is doing well.
This week, I wish to reflect on being a Rotarian, The Object of Rotary and the Rotary 4 Way Test.
All of us voluntarily join Rotary for a variety of reason be they personal or professional. Some of us may have been in Rotary for a couple of years while others have been Rotarians for decades. Regardless of the length of time that we have been Rotarians, I believe that it is worthwhile to periodically review The Object of Rotary and the Rotary 4 way Test to see if we, as Rotarians, are aligning ourselves to them.
The Object of Rotary is printed in every issue of Rotary Down Under. One cannot miss it even if one only perfunctorily skims through the magazine. However, for the benefit of members who may be too busy to “flip through” Rotary Down Under, I have copied it here.
“The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:
The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business and community life;
The advancement of international understanding, goodwill and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.”
Then we come to the Rotary 4 way Test. The 4 way test of the things we think, say or do is a test used by Rotarians world-wide as a moral code for personal and business relationships. Therefore, in whatever we do, it is useful to consider:
Is it the truth
Is it fair to all concerned
Will it build goodwill and better relationships
Will it be beneficial to all concerned.
The 4 way test was written by Herbert J Taylor who was a Member of Chicago Rotary Club. It was adopted by Rotary in 1943. It is an adaptive process and takes into account everyone’s point of view and concerns as well as their needs and wants. The process is to build goodwill and trust so a particular end result is mutually beneficial, sustainable and has scalable outcomes.
I believe that as Rotarians, we must be mindful of what Rotary stands for, particularly The Object of Rotary and The 4 Way Test.
I encourage all of us to examine our thoughts, words and actions and assess how well they align with how Rotarians behave and what we stand for.
Last week I had the honour of attending several days of training, in preparation for my year as District Governor, 9810. This was along with all my colleagues from the other 25 Districts that cover Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. Our Zone also includes East Timor and PNG. At the conclusion of our training we attended the Zone 8 Conference which took place over the weekend. The events took place in Canberra.

After discovering new perspectives and being inspired by new ideas at the 2022 Rotary International Convention, attendees and virtual participants are looking ahead to next year's gathering in Melbourne, the sparkling second city of Australia.
