Message from the President
This Wednesday our speaker is Bert d'Unienville, with his Man Behind The Badge talk. Now, your probably thinking that you have heard his talk before, but no, it wasn’t, it was a presentation about his ancestors from the early nineteenth century. This time Bert will be revealing his own story.
Last week Linda O’Brien and Karin Soster gave an introductory talk about the forthcoming District 9815 Conference for this year. If you were not present or simply forgotten you can read more about this on our club website. And while their presentation was informative, there is more information about the conference available on the District website.
Our first fellowship event for this year is the Pizza Pasta and Poetry night, on the 15th August at Kings Park Tennis Club, so far this has only 15 registrations, though I am sure that it is not too late to register. The poetry reading is not compulsory, but we may discover members with hidden talents.
I will put in another plug for the Rotary Youth Driver Awareness (RYDA ) programme on Monday 25th August, as so far there have only been two volunteers. I know that this is a weekday which makes less convenient, however it does give us the opportunity to engage with the other parts of the community outside of the market. The organisers, that is RYDA, need to know as soon as possible how many volunteers that we will supply.
Club President, 2025-26,
Grant Perry
(Ed: Please register herefor RYDA event - here you will also find detail of event and links to stories about RYDA)

Australian Rotary Health provides funding into a broad range of general health areas, providing scholarships for rural medical and nursing students, as well as Indigenous health students. ARH provides funding into areas of health that do not readily attract funding, and promotes findings to the community.
Australian Rotary Health is one of the largest independent funders of mental health research within Australia.
Australian Rotary Health provides funding towards research grants, fellowships and PhD scholarships focused on finding preventative and curative solutions for mental illness in young Australians. From 2023, funding focus has narrowed to the mental health of children aged 0-12.

It was the opening months of the COVID-19 lockdown, and students at Douglas Ewart High School in Newton Stewart, Scotland, were having trouble coping. “They came to us and said they were really struggling with their feelings and their thoughts during the pandemic,” recalls Jean Best. “They wanted to devise a toolkit so that all the youngsters at the school could help themselves.”
Fortunately, Best, who had a long career as a teacher and principal and as one of Her Majesty’s Inspectors of Education, was in a position to help the students help themselves.
Jo Impey was chairperson for today's club meeting at Cilantro. Charles joined the meeting via Zoom, and Gary Ramage was a guest. Jo acknowledged the staff at Cilantro.
INTERNATIONAL CLUB TOAST - Rotary Club of Makati, Philippines
Ian B introduced a return to our club's past practise of international club toasts, and conducted a toast to R.C. Makati in the Philippines. The R.C. Makati commenced in 1966 and has 130 members - the majority of whom are in business or hold professional positions. They seek sustainable projects with a high impact and meet many of the 7 areas of Rotary focus with projects in health, environmental programs, educational and vocational programs. The club commenced the Eradicate Polio pilot program in 1979 to immunise children in the Philippines, and which became the forerunner to the Polio Plus program launched by Rotary International in 1985. A video was shown on one of their educational programs. The club has sponsored 12 new clubs, received many awards, and is a large contributor to Rotary Foundation. Four club members are current contributors to the Arch Klumpf Foundation.
A copy of Powerpoint Presentation can be found here. To keep file size down, it excludes this video.
August is Rotary Membership and New Club Development Month. This month is dedicated to focusing on growing Rotary membership and establishing new clubs. It's a time to celebrate the value of Rotary membership and encourage clubs to connect with their communities and prospective members.
This is an ideal time to contemplate the numerous advantages of Rotary membership. Rotary is a worldwide network of neighbors, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers dedicated to creating a positive, enduring impact on our communities and across the globe. The pillars of Rotary's success are our united efforts in service, leadership, and fellowship.
The Rotary Club of Pascoe Vale, Vic, is lighting up lives globally while inspiring local school communities to take action on energy poverty.
Finding meaningful projects is a challenge for all Rotary clubs. When a project engages Rotarians in their local community with a positive outcome for communities abroad, then it is ticking many boxes.
Of interest to Club officers and, perhaps members in general is a document entitled Resource Guide for Rotary Club Officers.
It has been compiled by the RI South Pacific and Philippines Office of Rotary International.
It contains a wealth of information aimed more at Club Officers, as opposed to general membership. All Club Officers are encouraged to familiarize them selves with its contents.
Dee Mason chaired today's club meeting at Cilantro. Charles joined via Zoom, and guests included Nicky Chung, Gary Ramage, and our guest speaker - Grant Holland.
GUEST SPEAKER - Grant Holland of the Holland Foundation
Grant is founder and director of the Holland Foundation, a registered not-for-profit charity, based in Centre Road, Bentleigh.
As Editor of the Bulletin and responsible for the Club's website I am asking members to please consider sending me any news about events they may have attended on behalf of the Club or any project that is being undertaken by the Club.
I am very happy to convert your news into a story which will then appear in the Bulletin, but, more importantly, appear on our Website.
This will show any people coming to our Website what our Club is involved in and the projects we support.
So, please take some photographs and put together some words - I will do the rest. Please send me your photos in the highest resolution possible via email or WhatsApp. I will do the cropping etc. Please DO NOT send pics via SMS (MMS). These are next to useless.
Also, don't bother creating the article in Word or similar-just adds work. Just send the words and a few pics. I will do the rest.
The beginning of the new Rotary year is a time to remind Rotarians of our global message – Unite for Good.
Connection:
The power of human connection: The power of human connection is a fundamental aspect of Rotary. I encourage members to welcome new faces and strengthen these bonds. I believe that Rotary’s greatest gift to the world is its people and the relationships they forge.
President Grant chaired today's club meeting at Cilantro. Tony and Charles joined the meeting via Zoom. Guests included guest speaker, Darren Eger, Gabriela - a guest of PP Tim Lynch, and Gary Ramage.
Rotary and Road Safety Education: Keeping our young drivers safe behind the wheel - From July 2025 RDU Magazine here
As a community partner of Road Safety Education Ltd (RSE), Rotary clubs and members have been coordinating the Ryda program since 2001. Working side by side with RSE, state police and government departments, Rotary continues to deliver this essential program, keeping our youth safe on the roads and teaching them how to make responsible decisions as both drivers and passengers.
This article is intended to help members register themselves and/or a guest to a Club event. Note, your can also register your intention NOT to attend.
If an event is inviting members to register there will be a button with the word: "Members" below "Online Registration". refer image at left.
Note that you need to be already logged in as a member. If you are not a member, this page will not be of any help. It may still be possible to register for an event as a non member if the event is open to the public.
From the Calendar page here you can subscribe to the Club's event calendar.
This will result in the Club's calendar being added to your existing calendar subscriptions, thus ensuring that as an event is added (or modified) to the Club's calendar, it will appear on your phone, tablet etc. Calendars supported are Outlook, Google and Apple.
Take the link, Subscribe to Calendar, from the Calendar Page.
A point regarding the submission of images for the Bulletin and Website: Members are reminded that images have to meet a minimum size requirement, as has been specified for some time in the section at the bottom of this Bulletin. 820 pixels is the minimum size required with larger being better as this allows for cropping. The submission of images via MMS is NOT preferred as they are too small and of inferior quality. Email or Whatsapp is far superior.
Would any member like to take responsibility for the updating of the Club's Event Calendar? I have created a page of instructions here so it is very easy to take over.
Thank you, Ian Ballantine
I remind members that you are responsible for the information contained in the Club's database. This includes, birthdays, phone numbers, addresses etc etc. Even your own photo. You maintain this via this link.
Additionally, member's birthdays and anniversaries will no longer be listed in the Club Bulletin. This is to protect the privacy of members. This information is still available to members here.
Ian Ballantine
A reminder to members to keep checking the calendar of upcoming events for evening and perhaps, one day, daytime events.
Thank you for being a subscriber to our Weekly Club Bulletin. I try to have it published each week by Tuesday morning.
If you would like to have something included please contact me at editor@rotarybmc.org.au and attach, as separate files, the words and any images (jpg files are fine, minimum width 820 pixels). Please DO NOT send information as pdf files.
Ian Ballantine, Editor.
