Last week our speaker was Ken Mirams, he is District 915’s Youth Protection Officer. Ken gave a very interesting presentation on the District’s youth protection policy and how it impacts Rotary clubs and the members. When planning activities we should consider how these activities are affected by youth protection policies as Rotary is not the only organisation to have them. If members wish to know more I would suggest contacting Ron Brownlees, who is this club’s youth protection officer, or Tim Moran who has previously held that position and also works in local government youth programmes. And if anyone would like to see Ken’s presentation I can send you a copy of it.
This week our speaker is one of our own members, Paul Ferguson. Paul is talking to us about Interplast, an organisation that arranges international surgical procedures in developing countries. This is a very important programme that Rotary has been in involved with from almost the beginning. There are a number of facets to this programme that makes it invaluable to the countries that it operates in. Paul is a board member of Interplast Australia & New Zealand and has been so for a number of years, though he never mentions it, so he is ideally situated to inform us about this important programme.

Rotaractors with intellectual disabilities learn life skills
Cleo the two-toed sloth, cute enough to break the internet, was blowing Megan Marrero’s mind. She and a small group of fellow Rotaractors were visiting an aquarium in the tourism hub of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and marveling at the slow-moving, upside-down tree-hanging creature. It especially captured Marrero’s imagination.
Olayinka Hakeem Babalola selected to be 2026-27 Rotary International president
Olayinka Hakeem Babalola, a member of the Rotary Club of Trans Amadi, Nigeria, has been selected by the Board of Directors to become Rotary International’s president for 2026-27. His term will begin on 1 July 2026.
The Board, guided by the RI code of policies, conducted a special session to select the organization’s leader after the resignation of RI President-elect SangKoo Yun, who decided to step back from his Rotary responsibilities and focus on his recovery from recent cancer treatment.
Ron was our chairperson for this morning's club meeting at Cilantro. Guests included Colleen D'Offay, our guest speaker, and Nicky Chung. Charles and Karin attended via Zoom.
Ron commenced the meeting with 1 minutes silence in recognition and to honour the service of the 2 recently slain policemen in Porepunkah, and pay respect to their families. Terrible and very sad - our hearts go out to them. All of our community is impacted by such events.
Six club members were required as volunteers for the day which started for us around 9am and finished around 2.30pm. Morning tea and lunch was provided. Our duties were simply ushering around the six groups of students to each of six stations.
So, members who attended were:
Linda O'Brien, Pres Grant Perry, Paul Ferguson, Ron Brownlees, helen Parker and Ian Ballantine. Bert d'Unienville also attended and joined us on "our rounds".
Harnessing the collective power of more than 40 partner organisations, Rotary in Australia continues the fight against Trachoma in our Indigenous communities.
Commenced in 2016 by the Rotary Club of Melbourne, Vic, the EndTrachoma project was created to be a national Indigenous project to celebrate the centenary of Rotary in Australia in 2021. At the time, the World Health Organisation (WHO) had set a goal to eliminate Trachoma globally by 2020.
Trachoma is a bacterial infection of the eyes that can lead to blindness if left untreated. Australia remains the only developed country worldwide where the disease is endemic. It exists primarily in remote Indigenous communities where significant contributing factors include limited access to clean water and social and hygiene practices.
Kellie Carruthers was chairperson for this evening's club meeting at Cilantro, where club members, partners and guests were treated to a wonderful three course meal prepared and presented by Year 4 students of the Cordon Bleu Cookery School.
A special welcome to our guest speakers - Andrew Holden and Clarine Wheeler from SES, and accompanied by Clarine's husband and her parents.
CLUB ANNOUNCEMENTS
RYDA Event - Monday 25/8. Julie called for two more volunteers for Monday's RYDA event for students at Cheltenham Secondary College, adding lunch and morning tea will be provided.
BMC Board Meeting - President Grant reminded board members of the next board meeting on Monday 25/8 and to submit their board reports to Secretary Karin by the coming weekend.
GUEST SPEAKERS - SES Moorabbin Unit - Andrew Holden and Clarine Wheeler
Larry A. Lunsford, a member of the Rotary Club of Kansas City-Plaza, Missouri, USA, is the selection of the nominating committee to become Rotary International’s president for 2027-28. He will officially become the president-nominee on 15 September if no other candidates challenge him.
Lunsford attended Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri, on an academic scholarship, earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees in accounting. He first encountered Rotary when he received a Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship to spend the 1981-82 academic year at the University of Newcastle in Australia.

A point regarding the submission of images for the Bulletin and Website: Members are reminded that images have to meet a minimum size requirement, as has been specified for some time in the section at the bottom of this Bulletin. 820 pixels is the minimum size required with larger being better as this allows for cropping. The submission of images via MMS is NOT preferred as they are too small and of inferior quality. Email or Whatsapp is far superior.
