Message from our President
A total of sixteen members and partners attended the 9810 Conference in beautiful, sunny Canberra on Friday, March 3rd, Saturday, March 4th, and Sunday, March 5th.
The theme of the Conference was “Diversity”, hosted by DG Ken Millar and the RC of Emerald.
Beginning on Friday morning we had a choice of competing in a golf competition, a bowls competition, hop on hop off bus trips or a brunch at the National Galley before Conference registration opened on the Friday afternoon.
Friday evening has traditionally been for club dinners and this year was no different. Peter O’Brien organised a dinner at an Italian Restaurant which was superb. Thank you, Peter!
The serious stuff started on Saturday, continuing until Sunday with closing remarks at 1.30pm followed by lunch.
Highlights were:
• Catching up with long time friends from around the District, meeting the RIPPR and making new friends.
• Amazing, inspirational guest speakers such as Domenic Saporito from Mentor Match, Dr Dinesh Palipana, Frida Umohoza, Professor Brett Sutton and Peta Searle
• Information on Rotary Programmes such as Disaster Aid, RAM, Rotaract and many other programmes that showcased the work Rotary does within our Community and around the world.
• The fun black tie dinner at Parliament House where we danced the night away. Thank you to Linda O’Brien and Karen Soster for the dress accessories. We thought we looked fantastic, but the judges had other idea’s with Beaumaris winning the “Across the Ages” dress competition.
• Light relief with Robbie Evans who made us stretch to exercise our stiff limbs after sitting listening to so many engaging speakers. Johnathan Usher, magician and comedian who showed Ian Ballantine how to change a $20.00 note into a $50.00. So far Ian hasn’t shared that secret. Lastly but not least the crooning voice of Anthony Gerace accompanied by pianist Nick Englezos.
I have always come away from a Rotary Conference feeling humbled by what we do together as a District and in the World. I am sure those who attended feel the same.
Next year, District 9810’s conference will be in Warrnambool with Ian with partner Helen and our club hosting, a conference not to be missed.
