The speaker last week was Colin Smith who talked about the potter Merric Boyd and about Murrumbeena where he lived and worked, although at the time it wasn’t a suburb. I found it very interesting especially in reference to the development of Murrumbeena. as having lived most of my life in Oakleigh, which is almost next door to Murrumbeena, and would have developed at the same time and in the same manner.
Polio has been one of the major infectious diseases of humanity for thousands of years. The earliest known evidence was discovered in the remains of a teenager that was found in an ancient burial site encompassed by the modern day United Arab Emirates, the site is 4,000 years old.
The Global Polio Eradication Initiative was created in the 1970s by a group consisting of the World Health Organisation (WHO), Rotary International, the United Nations International Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). During the late ‘70s and early ‘80s limited programs were created control polio.
In 1985 PolioPlus was launched to eradicate polio. To commemorate this the 24th of October has been selected as World Polio Day, which this is this coming Friday. There is more information about PolioPlus on Rotary International’s website.

That the Board of Bentleigh Moorabbin Central support a donation of AU$10,000 to The Rotary Foundation and that this be taken to the club members for approval. This motion will be voted upon by members at the Club Meeting of October 22.
Annual General Meeting
NOTICE OF ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING & CALL FOR NOMINATIONS FOR ELECTION AS DIRECTORS AND OFFICERS
The Annual General Meeting of the Rotary Club of Bentleigh Moorabbin Central Inc. Will be held on Wednesday 26th November 2025 at a Cilantro.
Business includes Presentation of accounts for the Club and Market, Statutory matters for the Incorporated Association, and the Election of Directors and Officers for the Rotary year 2026-2027
The formal Agenda will be issued later.
Accordingly, members are invited to nominate other members to one of the positions on the Board of Directors that need to be filled for the year 2026-27 as well as Auditor for the same year.
The Board positions falling vacant at June 30, 2026 are:
President
Vice President
Secretary
Treasurer
President Elect (would immediately assume role of President Nominee)
Two Other Directors for a period of 2 years: 2026 - 2028
For information, the remaining three positions on the Board do not require election:
Past President - current President, Grant Perry
Two Directors - Kellie Carruthers and Larry Green commenced their tenure on July 1 2025, and will remain on the board to June 30, 2027.
All club members are eligible for nomination. Accordingly, members will be invited to either nominate themselves or another member (with the club member's consent) for any of the positions that fall vacant, and forward their nomination to the nominating committee (to be announced)

Rotary has always been a powerful and well-respected force, delivering volunteer-driven service. But today, in Zone 8, it faces a stark choice: evolve or risk on becoming irrelevant. The heart of Rotary is its volunteers, but unless we change how we engage, support and grow that spirit, we are at risk of losing the very lifeblood of our organisation.
Members Jo Impey, Linda and Peter O'Brien, Tim and Angela Lynch and Ian Ballantine and Helen Parker met up for a few drinks and a chat at Feast in Hampton Street last Friday evening.

With a US$2 million Rotary Programs of Scale award, a project makes high-quality care available to pregnant women, mothers, and newborns in Nigeria

In early 2024, a Rotary magazine writer traveled to Africa to report on a major initiative aimed at reducing that country’s high maternal death rate. Together for Healthy Families in Nigeria received a $2 million Rotary Programs of Scale grant to increase the availability of high-quality maternal health services and promote their use. The program was implemented in three Nigerian states and the Federal Capital Territory with the hope that it could be expanded in the future.
For more than two decades, Rotary has embraced innovative club models – from e-clubs to hub-and-spoke mergers – to adapt to members’ needs and expand its capacity for service.
For more than 20 years, Rotary has been promoting different club models to encourage clubs to adapt to how members prefer to meet and how prospective members prefer to volunteer. The e-club model was initiated in 2000 and the first club, Rotary eClub One in District 5450, chartered in 2002. The e-club pilot was launched to explore how the internet could be used to retain existing members and attract new ones.
Members Peter and Linda attended the Rio Carnival Charity Ball organised by Share a Dream for the Philipine Community. Member Terry Kane is heavily involved in this organisation.

Rotary initiative aims to lower maternal death rates in Papua New Guinea

Gwyneth Weuta is the only midwife serving a population of 12,000 in a rural part of Papua New Guinea. The area is a remote place where lush palms drink in the moisture that hangs in the air and forests are sonorous with the calls of shorebirds and tree frogs.
As Editor of the Bulletin and responsible for the Club's website I am asking members to please consider sending me any news about events they may have attended on behalf of the Club or any project that is being undertaken by the Club.
I am very happy to convert your news into a story which will then appear in the Bulletin, but, more importantly, appear on our Website.
This will show any people coming to our Website what our Club is involved in and the projects we support.
So, please take some photographs and put together some words - I will do the rest. Please send me your photos in the highest resolution possible via email or WhatsApp. I will do the cropping etc. Please DO NOT send pics via SMS (MMS). These are next to useless.
Also, don't bother creating the article in Word or similar-just adds work. Just send the words and a few pics. I will do the rest.

A point regarding the submission of images for the Bulletin and Website: Members are reminded that images have to meet a minimum size requirement, as has been specified for some time in the section at the bottom of this Bulletin. 820 pixels is the minimum size required with larger being better as this allows for cropping. The submission of images via MMS is NOT preferred as they are too small and of inferior quality. Email or Whatsapp is far superior.
