Message from our President
“Serve to Change Lives”
At this point in time, we are not able to commence our trial of having one evening meeting per month, the intent is that we utilize the 4th Wednesday of each month, HOWEVER just at this point venues with meeting rooms are few and far between not to mention the $50 plus meal cost for just a normal club meeting SO next weeks meeting will be a breakfast meeting at Cilantro 7 am start – watch this space though as the year develops, we are committed towards some flexibility within club activities – not change just for change sake – but providing our members with every opportunity to be inclusive for all we do.
It was wonderful to be back at our home meeting venue Cilantro last week, there was a real buzz in the room, very positive indeed, made more so by the induction to our club of Samantha Langridge who has demonstrated a commitment to Rotary since coming along the latter part of last year. It was lovely to welcome her Dad David, as a guest to the meeting. David is a former Rotarian, as is Samantha a former Rotaract member.
I would like to draw attention to a club social we have in place for this coming Friday evening 25th February. Titled “Pizza, Pasta, Poetry and Plonk” 7 pm start.
The cost is $5 per head as the club is subsiding the catering component. Drinks will be purchased at bar prices at the venue. To demonstrate our community partnerships Kings Park Tennis Club have kindly allowed us the use of their well-equipped club rooms at no cost. Members of the tennis club have been extended an invitation to join us along with the Rotary Club of Moorabbin members. The concept of the evening is to bring along a piece of poetry or verse to recite either a favourite piece or well known or perhaps something you have written yourself. I am looking forward to what should be a fun evening. Thanks go to Linda O’Brien for the concept and organisation. Details here including registration.
Rotary Storm Recovery Festival is this coming Sunday. Our club has taken on the duties of carpark attendees and marshalling duties within the venue on the 0830 to 1030 time slot.
We will car share to get to Monbulk. Members who are attending to my knowledge are, Alan Kempton, Margaret Mason, Peter Nolan, Ian Ballantine and myself. If I have missed anyone please be in touch. There is still an opportunity for other club members to come along and I am assured lots of helping jobs to be done, so if you have not responded yet and would care to come along, please let me know, everyone is most welcome. The official day will run 10 am – 2 pm.
Last year the community team donated monies to South Caulfield Community Centre’s open garden. They required funding to plant a “nature strip garden”. Our agenda in giving was community partnership support and Rotary’s Environment and Sustainability focus. At the time didn’t give this a lot of thought, just handed the money over. The Community centre which is very well managed by Tracey Burt and her team invited our club back to the commissioning of the finished product. Jo Impey and I attended this last Sunday as I have already reported. What I saw and what I learnt particularly in understanding the amount of work and commitment to get this nature strip garden to fruition made me realise that we are missing out on the rewards of our rotary work. I believe we need a stronger emphasis on learning how our giving is used.
So, moving forward for much more discussion I am sure, I am proposing that our club reporting for donations incorporate the impact of the donation, how many benefitted from this, what project the donation has enabled and the name of the club member who will be doing the follow-up visit to that organisation and then either arranging for them to visit the club or providing the report themselves back to the club.
With every best wish,
President Helen Nodrum
Our guest speaker this week is fellow member, Linda O'Brien who will take us down the memory lanes of South Melbourne.
As a result of ongoing disease surveillance, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) has confirmed a case of type 1 wild poliovirus (WPV1) in a child suffering from paralysis in Malawi. Analysis has shown the virus is genetically linked to WPV1 that had circulated in Pakistan’s Sindh province.
The meeting was held “back home” at Cilantro as well as on Zoom for members who were unable to attend in person. The guest speaker was Tania Hutchinson and we inducted a new member, Samantha Langridge.
Our Rotary club is a proud supporter of the Caulfield South Community House Community Garden, which is located at 450-452 Kooyong Rd, South Caulfield – enter the garden area off Jupiter St. Open days are held there each second Sunday of the month.
The meeting was held at ‘The Healy’, a newly built retirement complex at the corner of South Road and Healy Street Moorabbin. Sue Loeliger was our host. President Helen welcomed Leonie Ryan and thanked Sue for hosting the meeting. Helen then updated members on matters relating to the club and the board meeting held on 8 February.
