Message from the President

In a way this is the first opportunity for a president’s report in the bulletin for this Rotary year . I would first of all like to comment on Changeover and to say that I thought that it was a marvellous night and from what I have heard others also thought so. I would like to this opportunity to thank those who were responsible for making this year’s changeover the success it was.
They are:
  • Linda for organising the evening, including room the room and table arrangements and invitations.
  • Karin for I am not certain what, but she did seem to be everywhere with badges, certificates, awards and probably a lot of things that happened behind the scenes that I am unaware of.
  • Ron for being the master of ceremonies.
  • Ian for the slide show, arranging the piano player and spending most of the night taking photos.
  • Peter O’Brien and Garry for being willing gophers.

If I have forgotten anyone then I apologise for their omission.

This year is also a year of celebration as this club was chartered 30 years, ago in 1995. The first president was Charles Rener. The club is the result of the merger of RC Moorabbin Central, which was chartered 35 years ago and RC Bentleigh that was chartered 51 years ago in 1974.

Last Monday was the first board meeting for the year, while most of the discussions were nut and bolt issues that are the result of a new Rotary year, there are a couple items that members should note.

The first is that shortly a survey sent to all members, this will relate to meeting procedures that the board would like reviewed. Please take the time time respond to the survey as the club is your club.

The other issues is one that no-one likes and that is the annual dues. Renewal notices will be sent out soon and unfortunately there has been a small increase.

Club President, 2025-26,
Grant Perry

July is Maternal and Child Health Month
Every day mothers risk their lives giving birth and millions of children die each year from treatable, preventable causes. At least 7 million children under the age of five die each year due to malnutrition, poor health care, and inadequate sanitation. To help reduce this rate, we provide immunizations and antibiotics to babies, improve access to essential medical services, and support trained healthcare providers for mothers and their children. Your Rotary projects ensure sustainability by empowering the local community to take ownership of healthcare training programs. And there is more.....

Club Meeting July 2, 2025 Aila
Linda O'Brien chaired this morning's club meeting at Aila Cafe in Cheltenham - the first club meeting for the new Rotary year 2025 - 2026, and for Grant Perry presiding as President.  It was  an informal get together since Cilantro is closed for these weeks during school holidays.
Linda commenced the morning with a fun Quiz of selecting the originator of quotes made by famous people - many of which dated back to a much earlier time that was challenging for some.  Nevertheless, yours truly won the prize - a lovely bottle of pinot noir from Tassie.
President Grant hoped everyone enjoyed their time at Changeover on Saturday.  He thanked Ron for being Master of Ceremonies, Linda for organising the event and the wonderful decorations, PDG Ian for the slideshow that was on display throughout the evening, and the helpers who assisted during the evening.

Paul Harris Fellow
At the Club's recent Changeover evening a number of members were awarded Paul Harris Fellows in recognition of their service to the Club and Rotary International. For newer members, here is an explanation, (same as that given on Saturday evening).
A PAUL HARRIS FELLOW is a RECOGNITION that was introduced in 1957 in honour of Paul Harris who founded Rotary in 1905.
It was established to express appreciation for a contribution to the humanitarian and educational programs of the Rotary Foundation.

Rotary Theme for 2025-26
The Rotary International theme for the 2025-26 Rotary year is "Unite for Good".
This theme emphasizes using human connection to create positive change and encourage unity in a world that can be divided. It aligns with Rotary's Action Plan and encourages members to collaborate on service projects and build global impact by uniting people of all backgrounds.

One of the most important things we can do to tell our Rotary stories in an effective, compelling way is to make sure we all use consistent and unified messaging. You can use the president's message for 2025-26, Unite for Good, to inspire members, participants, and the public with an idea that aligns with our Action Plan and calls on us to work together. Using the presidential message in your club and district communications helps to convey Rotary’s global impact and create stronger recognition of Rotary’s name in our communities and with potential service partners. It can help people understand who we are and what we do and might even inspire them to join us.

Club Changeover  28 June 2025
BMC Changeover on Saturday 28/6 at the Sandy at Sandringham Football Club was a wonderful evening for all who attended.  A night of relaxed conviviality with the formalities of changeover handled with ease in the capable hands of MC Ron Brownlees.  This was a night of the changing of the guard to witness the end of Tim Lynch's term as president and welcome in the new term for Grant Perry.

Rotary International President 2025-26
Some members may be aware that there has been a very late appointment of the Rotary International President for 2025-26.
It was announced on June 9, 2025, that the then Rotary International President-elect Mário César Martins de Camargo had resigned.

In a letter to RI President Stephanie A. Urchick on 8 June, he said that personal reasons and business obligations prompted his decision. In a later message, de Camargo indicated that he will continue to be an active Rotary member and to serve his community.
A Rotary member since 1980, de Camargo was selected to be the 2025-26 RI president by the Nominating Committee for President in August 2023. Full story of the announcement here.

In an announcement made on June 14, 2025, we learned that Francesco Arezzo of Italy (pictured at right) would be International President for the 2025-26 year.

Note from the Editor re Images and Events
A point regarding the submission of images for the Bulletin and Website: Members are reminded that images have to meet a minimum size requirement, as has been specified for some time in the section at the bottom of this Bulletin. 820 pixels is the minimum size required with larger being better as this allows for cropping. The submission of images via MMS is NOT preferred as they are too small and of inferior quality. Email or Whatsapp is far superior.
Would any member like to take responsibility for the updating of the Club's Event Calendar? I have created a page of instructions here so it is very easy to take over.
Thank you, Ian Ballantine
