Message from the President
Our speaker for this week will be Colleen D'Offay, the new Secretary and Operations Manager for Donations in Kind (DIK). This is a Rotary project that manages donated goods for distribution around Australia and internationally. Colleen is also the current President of the Rotary Club of Brighton.
Last Thursday night’s meeting was enjoyed by everyone who attended. Clarine, an SES volunteer, gave a presentation about the SES, after which she was presented with a PHF. The PHF was sponsored by her brother, Denis, who also sponsored Clarine’s family to attend. A more detailed account of the meeting by Karin is on the club’s website.
For those who attended last Thursday’s meeting you may have noticed behind the lectern on the wall a Rotary banner. Ian has created this as a backdrop so as to show that speaker is at a Rotary function as the now that the lectern has been moved the background has been a relatively plain wall.
Ian, Helen P, Ron, Paul, Linda and myself assisted at RYDA by shepherding students to the various presentations. The event, while primarily for student education I also found informative especially in relation to recent changes to Victorian road laws that have occurred or are about to. A visit to RTA’s website is probably needed to be done soon.

Market Report: Clear & sunny morning Steady flow of foot traffic and a reasonably full market

Six club members were required as volunteers for the day which started for us around 9am and finished around 2.30pm. Morning tea and lunch was provided. Our duties were simply ushering around the six groups of students to each of six stations.
So, members who attended were:
Linda O'Brien, Pres Grant Perry, Paul Ferguson, Ron Brownlees, helen Parker and Ian Ballantine. Bert d'Unienville also attended and joined us on "our rounds".
Harnessing the collective power of more than 40 partner organisations, Rotary in Australia continues the fight against Trachoma in our Indigenous communities.
Commenced in 2016 by the Rotary Club of Melbourne, Vic, the EndTrachoma project was created to be a national Indigenous project to celebrate the centenary of Rotary in Australia in 2021. At the time, the World Health Organisation (WHO) had set a goal to eliminate Trachoma globally by 2020.
Trachoma is a bacterial infection of the eyes that can lead to blindness if left untreated. Australia remains the only developed country worldwide where the disease is endemic. It exists primarily in remote Indigenous communities where significant contributing factors include limited access to clean water and social and hygiene practices.
Kellie Carruthers was chairperson for this evening's club meeting at Cilantro, where club members, partners and guests were treated to a wonderful three course meal prepared and presented by Year 4 students of the Cordon Bleu Cookery School.
A special welcome to our guest speakers - Andrew Holden and Clarine Wheeler from SES, and accompanied by Clarine's husband and her parents.
CLUB ANNOUNCEMENTS
RYDA Event - Monday 25/8. Julie called for two more volunteers for Monday's RYDA event for students at Cheltenham Secondary College, adding lunch and morning tea will be provided.
BMC Board Meeting - President Grant reminded board members of the next board meeting on Monday 25/8 and to submit their board reports to Secretary Karin by the coming weekend.
GUEST SPEAKERS - SES Moorabbin Unit - Andrew Holden and Clarine Wheeler
Larry A. Lunsford, a member of the Rotary Club of Kansas City-Plaza, Missouri, USA, is the selection of the nominating committee to become Rotary International’s president for 2027-28. He will officially become the president-nominee on 15 September if no other candidates challenge him.
Lunsford attended Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri, on an academic scholarship, earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees in accounting. He first encountered Rotary when he received a Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship to spend the 1981-82 academic year at the University of Newcastle in Australia.
The Rotary Club of Pascoe Vale, Vic, is lighting up lives globally while inspiring local school communities to take action on energy poverty.
Finding meaningful projects is a challenge for all Rotary clubs. When a project engages Rotarians in their local community with a positive outcome for communities abroad, then it is ticking many boxes.
Of interest to Club officers and, perhaps members in general is a document entitled Resource Guide for Rotary Club Officers.
It has been compiled by the RI South Pacific and Philippines Office of Rotary International.
It contains a wealth of information aimed more at Club Officers, as opposed to general membership. All Club Officers are encouraged to familiarize them selves with its contents.

Dear Rotary Members,
As you may recall, last April, President-elect SangKoo Yun informed us all of his diagnosis of pancreatic cancer and his decision to step back from Rotary responsibilities so he could focus on his treatment. Today, President-elect SangKoo notified me in a letter that he has decided to resign as President-elect of Rotary International after extensive consultation with his doctors. In his message, he shared the following sentiments:
“My doctors have advised that it may not be possible for me to meet the demanding travel and schedule required of our President. As much as I wish to serve in this role, I must honor that advice.”
Marg Lucas was our chairperson for today's club meeting at Cilantro. Nicky Chung and Gary Ramage were visitors, and Charles joined via Zoom.
CLUB ANNOUNCEMENTS
Monday 25/8 - RYDA event at Sandown Greyhound Racetrack. Ron is still seeking volunteers to help out at the RYDA event for Cheltenham Secondary College. Tasks involve shepherding students to the correct location at the racetrack for their training sessions. Ian and Grant advise the task is simple, and rewarding, with training going a long way to improve driving outcomes for students planning to get their driver's licence.
Friday 15/8 - Pizza, Pasta and Poetry fellowship event. Linda is still taking numbers for this event. Attendees are requested to bring along a poem with a prize for the 'winning' presenter.
Thursday evening 21/8 - is the date for our next club meeting at Cilantro, in place of the usual Wednesday meeting, with SES Moorabbin Branch as our guest speakers.
A number of club members attended the changeover evening for the Moorabbin Rotary Club on the evening of August 11, 2025 at the Buckingham. The event was attended by District Governor Peter Behm.
From our Club we had President Grant, Peter and Linda, Karin and Gary, Tim and Angela, Bert, Ron and Marilyn, and Ian and Helen.
The meal was excellent and a great evening was enjoyed by all.
August is Rotary Membership and New Club Development Month. This month is dedicated to focusing on growing Rotary membership and establishing new clubs. It's a time to celebrate the value of Rotary membership and encourage clubs to connect with their communities and prospective members.
This is an ideal time to contemplate the numerous advantages of Rotary membership. Rotary is a worldwide network of neighbors, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers dedicated to creating a positive, enduring impact on our communities and across the globe. The pillars of Rotary's success are our united efforts in service, leadership, and fellowship.
As Editor of the Bulletin and responsible for the Club's website I am asking members to please consider sending me any news about events they may have attended on behalf of the Club or any project that is being undertaken by the Club.
I am very happy to convert your news into a story which will then appear in the Bulletin, but, more importantly, appear on our Website.
This will show any people coming to our Website what our Club is involved in and the projects we support.
So, please take some photographs and put together some words - I will do the rest. Please send me your photos in the highest resolution possible via email or WhatsApp. I will do the cropping etc. Please DO NOT send pics via SMS (MMS). These are next to useless.
Also, don't bother creating the article in Word or similar-just adds work. Just send the words and a few pics. I will do the rest.

A point regarding the submission of images for the Bulletin and Website: Members are reminded that images have to meet a minimum size requirement, as has been specified for some time in the section at the bottom of this Bulletin. 820 pixels is the minimum size required with larger being better as this allows for cropping. The submission of images via MMS is NOT preferred as they are too small and of inferior quality. Email or Whatsapp is far superior.
