Message from our President
“Serve to Change Lives”
The challenge of this past week that many club members got caught up in is acknowledged. But what needs to be front and centre is the response from all. The care, concern, phone calls and offers of help for those isolating at home were in abundance and it is truly the mark of a great club when everyone pulls together in such an active and positive way.
The plans for our meeting with Inner Wheel club ladies changed multiple times over this last week. Lots of phone calls, emails and considerations as to what we should be doing bearing in mind this combined meeting was deferred from last year during covid lockdown.
I was greatly relieved when the outcome to proceed and not defer again was reached and further relieved when agreement was reached to use the online, zoom platform, to conduct this meeting.
Many thanks to our guest speaker Mr. Matt Finnis, CEO St. Kilda Football club for being so flexible and accommodating as our plans changed day by day.
Zoom meeting is set for 7.30pm Wednesday 6th April
The link will be available on Wednesday so please check your inbox for that information. As soon as it is available, it will be added to event details here.
As we all know the history of Rotary is that it formed as a “men only” club.
Inner wheel was set up originally starting in Manchester in January 1924. It was established as a women’s only organisation to create friendship, service and understanding.
The Inner wheel motto is “Friendship and Service “lose yourself in the service of others”.
The Club had a special meeting at the Marine Hotel in Brighton so we could participate in the 2022 District 9810 Conference launch
Here are just a couple of photos - all photos are contained in an album here.
This week’s club meeting was held on Friday evening 25/3 in the Stables Room at the Marine Hotel, and was held in conjunction with the commencement of this year’s District 9810 conference. All clubs in the district were invited to participate and join in the conference opening and hear the opening address from D.G. Daryl Moran and presentations from the first two conference presenters using technology to Zoom in. The evening commenced with drinks and nibbles followed by the conference opening and the two presentations, before enjoying dinner mains and dessert. This year’s conference theme was working towards a Healthy World and Healthy People with a focus on sustainability.
The crisis in Ukraine is having devastating consequences on civilians as families flee their homes. According to the United Nations, more than 3 million people, most of them women and children, have sought refuge in neighboring countries and across Europe, while about 1 million more people have been displaced within Ukraine.
This week is Mental Health Week and in recognition members were invited to wear a hat to today’s meeting - everyone did with a variety of hats, caps and fascinators in different shapes and colours.
Today’s chairperson was Peter O’Brien, who looked resplendent in “a take on Lawrence of Arabia” wearing the keffiyeh headdress. Can I ask everyone - is there a likeness? Is this Peter O’Brien in a former life??
Access to Foundation grants will help Rotaractors broaden their impact
In 2018, Rotary International President Barry Rassin was visiting Turkey for a district meeting. His hosts took him around to see some projects — but to his surprise, they weren’t Rotary club projects. They were projects of Rotaract clubs.
