GUEST SPEAKER – Vicky McKay, president of Sandringham Life Saving Club – Silver Salties program
Vicky came to talk about a new program being run at the Sandringham Life Saving Club called Silver Salties which commenced at the club in October 2021.  Vicky delivered a slide presentation, with the assistance of Rodney, one of the owners of The Healey.  Silver Salties is a national program developed by Surf Life Saving Australia two years ago and supported by Sport Australia Move It Aus – Better Ageing Program for older Australians to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle whilst maintaining social connections within the community in a friendly and welcoming environment.   Silver Salties programs are being run in 50 Life Saving Clubs in Australia, with Sandringham Life Saving Club being one of three running the program in Victoria.  Whilst anyone over 18 can participate in the program, it is targeted for people aged 60 plus.  30 minutes of moderate physical activity is recommended each day.   The program has a wide range of activities that includes swimming and pool exercises, beach fitness activities, park activities and walks, yoga, Pilates, Tai Chi, and use of the Life Saving club clubhouse – particularly when not being used in winter.   Programs at Sandringham are held each weekday in the morning – and is open to people of all ages and abilities.  Swim sessions in the bay are held each Sunday at 8am, and they are trialing the use of wetsuits for swimming in winter.  Participants need to register (free) to participate and classes are $15 per class or $10 for concession card holders.  Currently there are 60 registered participants.  Program details at Sandringham can be found on the club’s website: https://sandringhamlsc.org.au/silver-salties    All program activities during October are free.
People are also welcome to join the Sandringham Life Savings Club with a $30 annual subscription and become volunteer activity leaders or club volunteers – this is particularly attractive to former members of the club who may feel life saving activities are beyond them, but still wish to participate in the club’s activities and continue to learn life skills.   Refer the club website for details: https://sandringhamlsc.org.au
Sandringham Life Saving Club, located on Beach Road, Sandringham, is having an open day on Friday 14/10 from 9:30-11:30am to promote the Silver Salties program – all are welcome.
Thank you Vicky for a very informative session
